Warwick Postgraduate Research Scholarships

Competition for entry in 2011-12
If you are applying to Warwick for a PhD (or MPhil/PhD) starting in 2011-12, and you are an outstanding academic candidate, you might wish to also apply for a Warwick Postgraduate Research Scholarship (WPRS) to fund your studies. It's worth preparing now - planning early is an essential factor in success in this very competitive process.

The Scholarship
Warwick Graduate School is delighted to offer around 45 Warwick Postgraduate Research Scholarships this year, which include:

    *   The payment of academic fees at the Home/EU rate (£3,466 for full-time students in 2010-11)
    *   A maintenance grant in line with the UK Research Council stipend (£13,590 for full-time award holders in 2010-11)

Students and applicants who wish to apply for an AHRC doctoral award should apply to the WPRS competition and will automatically be considered for both competitions. More details on applying for an AHRC doctoral award are available here.

This competition, unlike most postgraduate funding, is open to Home, EU, and Overseas students from all disciplines at Warwick, and offers an equal award to all.
Overseas Applicants

The WPRS pays academic fees at the Home/EU rate, so overseas students awarded a WPRS will need to fund the difference between the Home/EU fee rate and the Overseas fee they will be required to pay. Occasionally, academic departments may be able to assist in funding the difference, entirely at their discretion and as their budget allows.

However, all eligible overseas students applying for entry in October 2011 will also be considered for a Chancellor's International Scholarship, which pays the full overseas fee, by using a single application for both competitions. Details of how to apply are given below; details on eligibility for a Chancellor's International Scholarship are given here.
Applications welcomed from:

    * Applicants for a full-time doctoral course at the University of Warwick, expecting to begin in Autumn 2011.
    * Students currently enrolled on a three-year full-time PhD or MPhil/PhD (in the case of the Faculties of Arts, Medicine and Social Science), at the University of Warwick may apply in the first year of their registration only.
    * University of Warwick students currently registered on a "1+3" course at a Doctoral Training Centre, who are in their Master's year and expecting to start doctoral study in 2011-12. These students will be eligible for a three-year WPRS or (if paying overseas fees) a Chancellor's International Scholarship.
    * University of Warwick students currently registered on the “2+2” MPhil > PhD course in the Department of Philosophy may apply for a postgraduate research scholarship in either (or both) the first and second years of their MPhil. Students applying in the first year will be eligible for a three year WPRS or (if an overseas fees-payer) a Chancellor’s International Scholarship. Students applying in their second year will be eligible for a two year WPRS, or (if a UK or EU student) a two year AHRC doctoral award, or (if an overseas fees-payer) a Chancellor’s International Scholarship. No student will be permitted to apply for a WPRS/Chancellor's International Scholarship on more than two occasions. UK or EU Students will be eligible to apply (via a separate process) for an AHRC Master’s award to fund their two-year MPhil.

Applicants must have obtained or be expected to obtain at least an upper second class honours degree (or equivalent) from a recognised institution of higher education before 31 July 2011. Many disciplines (particularly in the Arts and Social Science Faculties) may also expect you to hold or expect to obtain a Master's degree as preparation for a PhD.

Applications are open to students from all disciplines currently represented at the University of Warwick.

Only one application per applicant per round is permitted, i.e. it is not possible to apply for a PhD in more than one department and seek a WPRS (or Chancellor's International Scholarship or AHRC doctoral award) for both.
Application deadline:

The competition will open for applications on 1 November 2010 and close on 31 January 2011.

No late applications will be accepted.

If you have questions not answered here, please email graduateschool@warwick.ac.uk. Please note we can advise on eligibility and preparation but we cannot give a preliminary assessment of your chances of succes.

The Cimo Fellowships 2010-2011

Background
The Centre for International Mobility CIMO awards scholarships to foreign post-graduate students and young researches to carry out post-graduate studies and research and teaching in Finnish universities. The objective of the scholarship programme is to increase mobility to Finland and to support internationalisation of research and teaching and to foster links between Finnish and foreign universities.

Applicants
Only representatives of Finnish universities who wish to host foreign scholarship holders and commit to shared goals with them are eligible to apply for the scholarship. Upon a successful application by the host, a personal scholarship is awarded to the foreign post-graduate student or young researcher. Post-doctorate research will not be funded.

Application deadline
There is a rolling deadline. Applications must be submitted at least 3 months before the proposed scholarship period. Decisions will be made within approximately 2 months after receipt of application.

Application
Applications should be submitted on the attached CIMO Fellowships application form, which should be filled in electronically, printed and signed. You can move from field to field using, for example, the tab key. Use your mouse or the space key to select the appropriate option. Open text fields should be filled in the section appearing in grey. Please remember to save the form on your computer before filling it in!
The application can be made in Finnish, Swedish or English.

In addition, you should explain the commitment of the host institution to the project and its possible financial support to the scholarship holder. A preliminary plan for subsequent funding of proposed research will be required in case the application is submitted in order to begin a doctorate dissertation in Finland (or to continue a doctorate dissertation at its early stages).

- Research plan (2 to 5 pages, including an introduction, objectives, work plan/work methods, expected results and their possible applications.)

The scholarship period may last from 3 to 12 months. The period may be extended only in exceptional cases. Short visits will not be funded.

Payment of the grant
The grant will be paid to the relevant university department. The university will pay the grant to the scholarship holder as a personal grant and will invoice CIMO one month after the end of the scholarship period at the latest. In cases, where the scholarship period extends over two calendar years, CIMO should be invoiced each year for the amount paid to the scholarship holder. A budget report should be attached with the invoice. The university must not deduce any general costs from the grant.

Practical arrangements
The host institution/applicant is responsible for all practical arrangements, such as entry arrangements to Finland, hosting, accommodation etc. The scholarship holder should attach an invitation letter from the host institute and a copy of CIMO’s scholarship decision with their visa application.

Master Degree Clarendon Scholarship at Oxford

Scholarships are awarded to academically excellent students with the best proven and future potential. Clarendon Scholarships are highly competitive, with less than 10% of applicants selected for the scholarship. Scholarships cover tuition and college fees in full and a generous grant for living expenses, and are open to students starting a new course at Oxford.

Whilst there are no quotas by course type, the majority of Clarendon scholars are working towards a DPhil (PhD). Scholarships are also awarded for 2-year graduate degrees (MPhil/BPhil/MLitt) or 1-year degrees (MSc/MSt/MBA/MFE).

A distinguishing feature of Clarendon scholarships is that scholars are selected from the leaders in their field - that is, academic departments nominate whom they believe are the most deserving of their place at the University of Oxford based on their academic record and ability to contribute significantly to their field of study, both in the present and future. This feature ensures the best and brightest minds are selected as Clarendon scholars.

Selection criteria vary slightly depending on the subject area and whether applicants apply for a taught or research degree, but include:

* An excellent academic record is essential: A first class honours degree or its equivalent (a GPA score of at least 3.7 if the mark is out of 4) or an outstanding academic record at Master's level is necessary. Other indicators of high academic achievement may include individual marks on student transcripts; evidence of previous university prizes or awards; information on your overall position within your cohort; and publications (if applicable).
* Aptitude for the proposed course of study: This may be assessed by reviewing academic references, the research proposal, demonstrated evidence of aptitude for research, and the likelihood the scholar will contribute significantly to their field of study.
* Student motivation: This is assessed through evidence of the applicant's commitment to their proposed course, evaluated by the personal statement and referees' reports.

The closing date is the same as the January application deadline for submitting a graduate admissions application to the University (7 January 2011 for Medical Sciences and Philosophy; 14 January 2011 for Said Business School applicants; 21 January 2011 for all other subjects).

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years of service in the U.S. Senate.

The purpose of the Foundation is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields.

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Program was created to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering and to foster excellence in those fields.

In awarding scholarships, the Foundation Board of Trustees will consider the nominee's field of study and career objectives and the extent to which that individual has the commitment and potential to make a significant contribution to his or her field.

Nominees for Goldwater Scholarships must include in their online application a statement of interest in a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering, detailing how their academic program and their overall educational plans will prepare them for their chosen career goal. It is expected that students selected as scholars will pursue advanced degrees.

Students who plan to study medicine are eligible for a Goldwater Scholarship only if they plan a research career rather than a career as a medical doctor in a private practice.

The 2011 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship application will launch September 1, 2010
Institution's designated Goldwater Faculty Representative must electronically submit their completed online application(s) for the Goldwater Scholarship by January 31, 2011, 5:00 p.m. central time. Faculty representatives may establish an internal deadline prior to January 27 for all students to have their application completed. Nominations not electronically submitted online by 5:00 p.m. central time on January 31, 2011, will not be considered. Institutions must mail all supporting documents to the Iowa City address by the receipt deadline of February 1, 2011. Customer support will only be available from 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m. central time, Monday–Friday.
