The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years of service in the U.S. Senate.

The purpose of the Foundation is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields.

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Program was created to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering and to foster excellence in those fields.

In awarding scholarships, the Foundation Board of Trustees will consider the nominee's field of study and career objectives and the extent to which that individual has the commitment and potential to make a significant contribution to his or her field.

Nominees for Goldwater Scholarships must include in their online application a statement of interest in a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering, detailing how their academic program and their overall educational plans will prepare them for their chosen career goal. It is expected that students selected as scholars will pursue advanced degrees.

Students who plan to study medicine are eligible for a Goldwater Scholarship only if they plan a research career rather than a career as a medical doctor in a private practice.

The 2011 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship application will launch September 1, 2010
Institution's designated Goldwater Faculty Representative must electronically submit their completed online application(s) for the Goldwater Scholarship by January 31, 2011, 5:00 p.m. central time. Faculty representatives may establish an internal deadline prior to January 27 for all students to have their application completed. Nominations not electronically submitted online by 5:00 p.m. central time on January 31, 2011, will not be considered. Institutions must mail all supporting documents to the Iowa City address by the receipt deadline of February 1, 2011. Microsoft scholarship in computer science

A Microsoft scholarship provides a leg up so you can pursue undergraduate studies in computer science and related technical disciplines. You’ll join a community of scholarship recipients from the United States, Canada and Mexico who share your passion for technology and academic excellence. It all adds up to achieving your primary goal—making a real difference in the software industry.

Microsoft is offering four different types of technical scholarships for the 2011-2012 academic year to current undergraduate students: General Scholarships, Women's Scholarships, Minority Scholarships, and Scholarships for Students with Disabilities.

Requirements
Basics
If you’re interested in applying for the 2011-2012 academic year scholarships, make sure you postmark your application by February 1, 2011 in order for your application to be considered. Microsoft selects final candidates based on the following criteria:

Provisions
As a recipient of one of our scholarships, you’ll enjoy the benefits for one academic year. You may receive either a full or partial scholarship for the 2011-2012 academic year. Full tuition scholarships will cover tuition for the 2011-2012 academic year as posted by the financial aid office at your college or university. Microsoft will make payments to the designated school, and they’re not transferable to other academic institutions. You may use the funds for tuition only—not for other costs listed on your bursar bill, such as room and board.

You’ll also need to apply for a summer internship and if offered an internship, you must complete the salaried summer internship of 12 weeks or more at Microsoft Corporation in Redmond, Washington. (Microsoft reserves the right not to offer an internship position to the scholarship winner if an appropriate match cannot be found.)

Eligibility
To be eligible, you must be enrolled full time in a Bachelor's degree program at a 4-year college or university in the United States, Canada, or Mexico at the time you submit the application. Plus, we’ll need to see that you’re making satisfactory progress toward an undergraduate degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related technical discipline such as electrical engineering, math, or physics—and that you demonstrate an interest in computer science. Because the scholarship is merit based, you must maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average out of a possible 4.0, or a 4.0 cumulative grade point average out of a possible 5.0. PhD Scholarship in Marine Survival of Sea Trout

A PhD Scholarship in Marine Survival of Sea Trout is available at the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua) with starting date October 2010.

The project will be carried out in the Section for Freshwater Fisheries Ecology in Silkeborg.

DTU Aqua is an institute at the Technical University of Denmark. The purpose of DTU Aqua is to provide research, advice and education at the highest international level within the sustainable exploitation of living marine and freshwater resources, the biology of aquatic organisms and the development of ecosystems as well as their integration in ecosystem-based management. The institute has an international research staff comprising approx. 90 academic employees.

Project description
A considerable part of the sea trout (Salmo trutta) lifecycle takes place in the marine environment. Basic knowledge on survival and behaviour is relatively well documented in the freshwater phase. Equivalent knowledge in the marine phase is, however, very poorly documented. A significant contributing factor has been methodological problems in addressing this phase.

Recent state of the art development within the field of telemetry has, however, now made it possible to study sea trout behaviour in the marine phase more thoroughly, principally by electronic tagging such as passive integrated tags (PIT), acoustic tags and data storage tags (DST).

By tagging with PIT tags and simple acoustic tags it is possible to monitor when the fish passes a given location. Typically this will be at the outlet of a stream or fjord where the conditions are suitable for setting up the various systems. Concurrently, other tag types, such as DST tags and acoustic oxygen transmitters open the possibility to register information on the surrounding environment of the fish of hitherto unseen resolution.

The present project aims to expand our knowledge base on sea trout behaviour and survival in the marine environment. In addition the project has the potential to provide detailed information on a number of other important life history events, such as timing of upstream and downstream movement migration, run timing of maiden vs repeat spawners, potential correlation between run timing of smolt phase and adult phase etc.

Qualifications
We are looking for a candidate who has:

* Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree, or equivalent, in Aquatic Sciences
* Previous experience in aquatic research
* Proficiency in written and spoken English
* Keen interest in research and for working within the field of aquatic sciences

Approval and Enrolment

The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.

The Pöyry Engineering Scholarship

Pöyry is a global consulting and engineering firm focusing on the energy, forest industry and infrastructure & environment sectors.

Pöyry Energy is a major provider of front end and specialist consultancy services to the Oil & Gas industry in Europe, the Asia Pacific Region and the Middle East.

The scholarship is open to full time students commencing third year of any of the undergraduate degree programmes listed below in September 2010:

* MEng Chemical Engineering (H810)
* MEng Mechanical and Electrical Engineering with Energy Studies (H3H2)
* MEng Mechanical Engineering with Control (H3HP)

1 scholarship is available.

Please note that any number of scholarships can be applied for; however priority will be given to students not already in receipt of a scholarship. Students are not able to hold more than one corporate scholarship at any one time.

The scholarship is valued at £2,000 per annum and will be awarded to the successful applicant for the rest of their undergraduate degree programme.

The successful applicant will receive £2,000 per annum for each of years 3, 4 and 5 of their undergraduate degree programme (i.e. £6,000 over 3 years).

You should note that the scholarship is open to all students commencing the third year of any of the eligible degree programmes listed above in September 2010, regardless of nationality, where they are domiciled, or fee structure to which they belong to.

The scholarship will be subject to the scholarship recipient successfully completing each year of their degree to the satisfaction of the School of Engineering. The scholarship will lapse if the scholar ceases to study an eligible degree programme or leaves the University of Aberdeen. Where a scholarship recipient is required to repeat a year because they failed to reach the required academic requirements, payment will not be made for the repeat year and resumption of the scholarship will be based on individual circumstances and will be at the discretion of the Head of School of Engineering. The scholarship can only be held by students of the University – they cannot be transferred to another institution.

In addition to the financial support detailed above, the Pöyry Scholarship offers:

The College of Physical Sciences Scholarship Committee, comprising the Head of School of Engineering, nominated course leaders, and a representative of the Development Trust, will consider the applications, shortlist the candidates and make the awards. In making the decision, the selection panel will take into account your educational background and achievements, other relevant information given in your application form, personal statement, and the statement from your referee.

The University will award the scholarship to applicants who have good academic potential, and who are likely to be successful in their chosen degree course.

The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and personal characteristics. Academic merit will be judged on first and second year academic performance. In respect of personal characteristics, applicants should be able to show, through submission of a personal statement (section 5 of the application form), that they:

* Have a keen interest in the oil and gas industry
* Are enthusiastic, ambitious, highly motivated and determined to succeed academically and professionally
* Take a pro-active approach and have a strong commitment to self-development
