We are glad to announce that "Yousef Jameel Scholarship" Program at Sabancı University is extended for another five years.
The "Yousef Jameel Scholarship" is intended to provide full support to outstanding students seeking high achievements in science and technology. It includes support for, tuition fee, monthly stipend-for accommodation and living expenses and some amount for books and supplies.
"Yousef Jameel Scholarship" can be awarded to the outstanding full time students enrolled in the graduate programs (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, with precedence given to the eligible candidates of the Mechatronics graduate program.
The scholarship will be awarded to outstanding, both newly admitted and to continuing students. Candidates must have an academic performance indicator clearly compatible with high honors level of cumulative grade point average or have BS CGPA greater than or equal to 3.50. The selection will be strictly based on merit, without any discrimination of gender, nationality, race or faith of the students. In support of international education, under the same other conditions preference will be given to foreign nationals.
The scholarship is awarded to a student for one academic year and it may be extended if student's performance meets requirements of scholarship.
The scholarship may be awarded to a MS student for maximum 2 years and for a PhD student for maximum 4 years.
If student's performance does not meet requirements of scholarship he/she may be suspended for further scholarship.
We are inviting applicants for school year 2010-2011 to make their application not later than 30th July 2010. The application documents should include clear proof of satisfactory performance indicator, the Statement of research interests and achievements, and statement on other financial support applicant receive or will receive for school year 2010-2011.

This scholarship will build on successful research initiatives in the Institute for Learning. Shape Up, funded by DG Sanco for 3 years, focused on how children and young people could address the determinants of obesity. Hull City Council has extended Shape Up in all primary schools for a 2 further years. As part of the development of Shape Up we are looking for the PhD to investigate the appropriateness of the project in other parts of the world including Australia, and in this case, the Middle East. The project will be conducted in collaboration with Sultan Qaboos University in Oman.
The successful applicant will need an understanding of the education systems of the Middle East and Oman and Jordan in particular. They will also be skilled quantitative and qualitative researchers who are comfortable researching across education organisations and health promotion in school communities.
Supervision will be by Professor Derek Colquhoun, Jo Pike and at this stage we envisage additional supervision by staff at Sultan Qaboos University, Oman.
Applicants will be expected to hold a minimum of a UK upper second class Honours degree, or equivalent, in an appropriate discipline.
The International PhD Fee bursaries will cover full tuition fees for full-time overseas students for three years, depending on satisfactory progress.

Envisioned research
The applicants will be focusing on (connected) smart environments in which context-aware interactive visualizations on arbitrary surfaces for multiple simultaneous users are realized. This implies investigating the required supporting infrastructure (hard- and software) for the creation of such environments, protocols for communication, software to support users and applications, tools for end-users and developers to interact, and finally appropriate and novel ways of interaction. The goal is to develop the next-generation everywhere display for distributed collaborative environments where large data sets are typically required to accomplish the envisioned end-user goals.
Profile and diploma
Enthusiastic applicants with excellent study results are invited to apply. Successful applicants have a keen interest in the aforementioned research and can work both independently as well as in team. Candidates should hold a master degree in computer science, a civil engineer degree in computer science or equivalent. Watts Family Scholarship
Fully funded PhD Studentship in the History of Stalybridge and its region, c. 1800-1930
The School of Arts, Histories and Cultures at the University of Manchester is pleased to offer a three-year fully-funded doctoral studentship to commence in October 2010 for research into the history of Stalybridge and its region between 1800 and 1930. We are looking for a highly promising student who will relish the opportunity of engaging in wide-ranging historical research on this topic. The successful candidate will meet the University's criteria for eligibility and should normally have, or be expecting, a good Masters degree in history or an allied subject and be able to demonstrate the potential to develop advanced research skills. The award pays home tuition fees and a maintenance grant based on the levels set by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (£17,500 p.a. from which tuition fees will be deducted*) plus an amount for travel/research expenses. The studentship will be supervised by Professor Hannah Barker of the School of Arts, Histories and Cultures.
Stalybridge was a town of the industrial revolution: from a village supporting a handful of families in the mid eighteenth century, by the late nineteenth century it was an urban centre with a population of over 40,000. John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles in 1887 described it as 'entirely modern, dating from the year 1776' when the first cotton mill opened. A hub of activity and industry, it had 'communication in all directions by railway. The principal mfrs. are the spinning of cotton yarns and the weaving of calicoes, but there are also numerous iron foundries and machine shops'. The town's industrial strength grew steadily throughout the Victorian period, only slipping in the early 1930s when both cotton and metal working declined.
Stalybridge was also a centre of radical and progressive politics. During the opening decades of the nineteenth century it witnessed Luddite disturbances before seeing Chartist action, Plug riots and unrest associated with the cotton famine around mid century. It was also home to a number of different religious congregations and the scene of Protestant-Catholic unrest during the 1860s. During the nineteenth century it became an increasingly confident town and one where 'improving' and philanthropic endeavour was common. Stalybridge saw the foundation of one of the country's early Mechanics Institutes and numerous public building works and can lay claim to having the oldest civic brass band in Britain.
Despite Stalybridge's place in the industrial and political history of the North West and Britain as a whole, it has received limited historical attention. A few scholarly works touch on aspects of the town's history, but no detailed study exists of the town's growth and of the companies and people that made it. Many of the firms which based themselves here (including Taylor Lang, a Stalybridge company that manufactured machines for the cotton industry to which the Watts family have close connections) have left limited historical records that could be pieced together to form a more comprehensive picture of economic development. The School of Arts, Histories and Cultures at the University of Manchester is pleased to offer a three-year fully-funded doctoral studentship to commence in October 2010 for research into the history of Stalybridge and its region between 1800 and 1930. We are looking for a highly promising student who will relish the opportunity of engaging in wide-ranging historical research on this topic. The successful candidate will meet the University's criteria for eligibility and should normally have, or be expecting, a good Masters degree in history or an allied subject and be able to demonstrate the potential to develop advanced research skills. The award pays home tuition fees and a maintenance grant based on the levels set by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (£17,500 p.a. from which tuition fees will be deducted*) plus an amount for travel/research expenses. The studentship will be supervised by Professor Hannah Barker of the School of Arts, Histories and Cultures.
Stalybridge was a town of the industrial revolution: from a village supporting a handful of families in the mid eighteenth century, by the late nineteenth century it was an urban centre with a population of over 40,000. John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles in 1887 described it as 'entirely modern, dating from the year 1776' when the first cotton mill opened. A hub of activity and industry, it had 'communication in all directions by railway. The principal mfrs. are the spinning of cotton yarns and the weaving of calicoes, but there are also numerous iron foundries and machine shops'. The town's industrial strength grew steadily throughout the Victorian period, only slipping in the early 1930s when both cotton and metal working declined.
Stalybridge was also a centre of radical and progressive politics. During the opening decades of the nineteenth century it witnessed Luddite disturbances before seeing Chartist action, Plug riots and unrest associated with the cotton famine around mid century. It was also home to a number of different religious congregations and the scene of Protestant-Catholic unrest during the 1860s. During the nineteenth century it became an increasingly confident town and one where 'improving' and philanthropic endeavour was common. Stalybridge saw the foundation of one of the country's early Mechanics Institutes and numerous public building works and can lay claim to having the oldest civic brass band in Britain.
Despite Stalybridge's place in the industrial and political history of the North West and Britain as a whole, it has received limited historical attention. A few scholarly works touch on aspects of the town's history, but no detailed study exists of the town's growth and of the companies and people that made it. Many of the firms which based themselves here (including Taylor Lang, a Stalybridge company that manufactured machines for the cotton industry to which the Watts family have close connections) have left limited historical records that could be pieced together to form a more comprehensive picture of economic development. ICE WaRM offers a scholarship programme to attract high quality international students to education and training in water resources management, delivered by ICE WaRM partner institutions.
The ICE WaRM scholarship programme aims to:
