The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

The Foundation will award undergraduate scholarships to outstanding students, to be known as Barry M. Goldwater Scholars, in the spring of 2010 for use during the 2010–2011 academic year. The awards will be made on the basis of merit to two groups of students—those who will be college juniors and those who will be college seniors in the 2010–2011 academic year—who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. Four-year institutions are eligible to nominate up to four students who are in the sophomore or junior class during the 2009–2010 academic year. Two-year institutions may nominate up to two students who are sophomores during the 2009–2010 academic year. To be considered, a student must be nominated by his or her college or university using the official online nomination process on the Foundation's website.

Each scholarship covers eligible expenses for undergraduate tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum of $7,500 annually. Scholarship monies not used during one academic year are not transferable to the succeeding academic year. Junior-level scholarship recipients are eligible for a maximum of two years of scholarship support, and senior-level scholarship recipients are eligible for a maximum of one year of scholarship support. Scholars may opt to study abroad, but their Goldwater funding will be based on their U.S. institution's budget. Please consult with the Foundation prior to signing up for an overseas program, as there may be some costs associated with being overseas that are prohibited from being covered by this scholarship.

The Trustees intend to award up to 300 Goldwater Scholarships. The number of scholarships to be awarded per state will depend on the number and qualifications of the nominees from the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and, considered as a single entity, Guam, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

The word "resident" as used in this context refers to a person who has legal residence in the state from which he or she is a candidate. This status might be indicated by parents' place of residence. If that criterion of residence is not relevant, the candidate's legal residence will be determined by his or her eligibility for in-state tuition rates (where applicable) and place of voter registration.

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Program was created to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering and to foster excellence in those fields

Institution's designated Goldwater Faculty Representative must electronically submit their completed online application(s) for the Goldwater Scholarship by January 29, 2010, 5:00 p.m. central time. Faculty representatives may establish an internal deadline prior to January 29 for all nominees to have their application completed. Nominations not electronically submitted by 5:00 p.m. central time on January 29, 2010, will not be considered. Institutions must mail all supporting documents to the Iowa City address by the receipt deadline of February 1, 2010. Customer support will only be available from 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m. central time, Monday–Friday.

Scholarship for PhD and post-doctoral studies in Sweden

Countries
The program is open to candidates from three different categories of countries that determine certain aspects of the program.

1. Category oneCandidates coming from all countries on the Development Assistance Committee list of recipients of Official Development Assistance, the so-called ODA recipients.

From the above DAC list some priority will be given to candidates coming from countries that Sweden have long-term development cooperation with. This means that a minimum of 50 % of the candidates will be chosen from the following countries: Bangladesh, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Cambodia, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

The program is not open to candidates from Ukraine, Belarus and Turkey, in spite of them being on the DAC list of ODA recipients. These citizens should instead apply for scholarship through the Visby Program, or in the case of Turkey, the Swedish-Turkish Scholarship Program.

In category one we have the opportunity to offer approximately 50 scholarships. The final number of scholarships depend on how many candidates in the final selection that have applied for PhD studies or Postdoctoral research, and on how long these candidates plan to stay in Sweden 6 or 12 months, or sandwich (several shorter research visits).

2. Category twoCandidates coming from the following countries: France, Germany, Great Britain, Japan and the United States.

In category two we have the opportunity to offer approximately 5-10 scholarships. The final number of scholarships depend on how many candidates in the final selection that have applied for PhD studies or Postdoctoral research, and on how long these candidates plan to stay in
Sweden 6 or 12 months, or sandwich (several shorter research visits).

3. Category threeCandidates coming from the following countries: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Georgia, Kosovo, Moldova, Serbia.

In category three we have the opportunity to offer approximately 5-10 scholarships. The final number of scholarships depend on how many candidates in the final selection that have applied for PhD studies or Postdoctoral research, and on how long these candidates plan to stay in Sweden 6 or 12 months, or sandwich (several shorter research visits).

Target groups
The program provides PhD students and researchers with an excellent opportunity to conduct a study or research visit to a Swedish university within all fields of study. As a Guest Scholarship Program candidate you can choose to apply for a study/research visit to Sweden according to the
following models:

1.Post-doctoral research: a long-term postdoctoral research visit of 6
or 12 months.

2.PhD studies: a long-term PhD research visit of 6 or 12 months.

3.PhD-studies: PhD research visit according to a sandwich setup, i.e. several shorter research visits.

Scholarship benefits
The scholarship amounts to SEK 12,000 per month for PhD students and SEK 15,000 for postdoctoral researchers.

Who is eligible?
The scholarships are intended for guest students or researchers belonging to any of the above mentioned countries and target groups, applying for full-time temporary studies/research in Sweden. There is no age limit for the scholarship holders.

However, you are not eligible for this scholarship if any of the following is true:

*You have already lived in Sweden for two years of more when the
scholarship period is due to begin.
*You have a Swedish permanent residence permit.
*You have a Swedish work permit and you are not an EU citizen.
*You are applying for a scholarship at PhD level but you are not enrolled in ongoing PhD studies at your home university.
*You are applying for a scholarship at Postdoctoral level, but you do not hold any PhD degree.

New applicants will be given priority over applicants that have previously been awarded a scholarship from the SI for study or research at a Swedish
university.

Travel grants
Scholarship holders from ODA countries will receive travel support in connection with the scholarship. The travel grant is a lump sum given only once. However, PhD students on a sandwich setup from ODA recipient countries will be given a travel grant in connection to every research visit to Sweden (maximum four visits divided over two years).

Candidates from the following countries receive SEK 5 000: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia.

Candidates from remaining ODA recipient countries receive SEK 10 000.

Insurance
Scholarship holders are insured by the Swedish State Group Insurance against illness and accident during the scholarship period. For citizens of EU member states and other Convention countries the insurance applies with certain limitations.

Scholarship limitations
Scholarship periods are fixed to 6 or 12 months, except for the PhD sandwich setup that entails a maximum of 12 months to be used between September 1, 2009 and August 31, 2011, i.e. over a period of two years with maximum 2 research visits per year. The scholarship periods cannot be
altered or prolonged.

The scholarship is designed to cover the cost of living for the scholarship holder only. There are no grants available for family members. No bench fee is provided.

How to apply

Microsoft College Scholarships

Microsoft College Scholarships
We’re making it easier for future computer scientists to excel in what they love to do. A Microsoft scholarship provides an advantage so you can pursue studies in computer science and related technical disciplines. You’ll join other scholarship recipients from the United States, Canada, and Mexico who share the passion for software and academic excellence. It all adds up to achieving your primary goal—to make a real difference in the software industry.

Microsoft is offering four different types of technical scholarships for the 2010-2011 academic year to current undergraduate students: General Scholarships, Women's Scholarships, Minority Scholarships, and Scholarships for Students with Disabilities.

Requirements
Basics
If you’re interested in applying for the 2010-2011 academic year scholarships, make sure you postmark your application by February 1, 2010 in order for your application to be considered. Microsoft selects final candidates based on the following criteria:

Eligibility
Quality of application
Displayed interest in the software industry
Commitment to leadership
Financial need

Please check your e-mail on March 19, 2010, the day we notify all rewarded scholarship recipients. We will strive to contact all applicants about their status, however please note that due to the high number of scholarship applicants, we may only be able to contact candidates who were awarded scholarships.

Diversity at Microsoft
We encourage student populations currently underrepresented in the field of computer science to pursue technical degrees. All candidates who meet the criteria for eligibility described below may certainly apply, while we do award a large majority of our student scholarships to women, minorities, and the disabled. Minority applicants must belong to one of the following groups underrepresented in the software field: African-American, Hispanic, or Native American.

Provisions
As a recipient of one of our scholarships, you’ll enjoy the benefits for one academic year. You may receive either a full or partial scholarship for the 2010-2011 academic year. Full tuition scholarships will cover tuition for the 2010-2011 academic year as posted by the financial aid office at your college or university. Microsoft will make payments to the designated school, and they’re not transferable to other academic institutions. You may use the funds for tuition only—not for other costs listed on your bursar bill, such as room and board.

You’ll also need to apply for a summer internship and if offered an internship, you must complete the salaried summer internship of 12 weeks or more at Microsoft Corporation in Redmond, Washington. (Microsoft reserves the right not to offer an internship position to the scholarship winner if an appropriate match cannot be found.)

Eligibility
To be eligible, you must be enrolled full time in a Bachelor's degree program at a 4-year college or university in the United States, Canada, or Mexico at the time you submit the application. Plus, we’ll need to see that you’re making satisfactory progress toward an undergraduate degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related technical discipline such as electrical engineering, math, or physics—and that you demonstrate an interest in computer science. Because the scholarship is merit based, you must maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average out of a possible 4.0, or a 4.0 cumulative grade point average out of a possible 5.0. For more detailed information regarding eligibility, please read our FAQ.

The Netherlands Fellowship Programmes

The Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP) are demand-driven fellowship programmes designed to promote capacity building within organizations in 61 developing countries by providing training and education to their mid-career staff members.

Half of the available fellowships should be awarded to female candidates and the other half should be spent on candidates from sub-Saharan Africa. Apart from this, priority is given to candidates from priority groups and/or from marginalized regions to be defined by the embassies.

The NFP is funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the development cooperation budget.

Employer support

The need for education and training must be linked to the institutional development of the organization the applicants are working for. This means that applicants must be nominated by their employers. In fact, applications without the support of an employer will not be considered.

NFP sub-programmes

NFP master’s, NFP short courses and NFP PhD studies award fellowships to individuals. NFP also finances refresher courses for NFP alumni who would like to prolong the effect of earlier learning and update their knowledge and skills.

The fellowship

An NFP fellowship is intended to supplement the salary that the fellowship holder should continue to receive (at least partially) during the study period. The allowance is considered to be a contribution towards the cost of living for one person, whether in the Netherlands or in another country. The fellowship can also cover the costs of tuition fees, visas, travel costs, insurance and thesis research.

How to apply?

If you want to apply for PhD studies, master’s degree programmes or short courses you must first gain academic admission to the course of your choice before applying for a fellowship through the Netherlands embassy or consulate in your country. Also, you can only apply for an NFP fellowship if the course is on the NFP course list for that particular year.

In all cases, you are advised to contact the Netherlands Embassy, Consulate or local Nuffic Neso office well in advance for specific instructions, and to inquire about specific local procedures and deadlines, requirements and selection criteria. These may differ from the general information provided on Nuffic’s website or in the brochures.

More information

More information about NFP, including the application forms, is available at Netherlands Embassies and Consulates, Nuffic Neso offices or from this website under the three different sub-programmes as mentioned above.
