Arts Commission Offers Grants

The D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH) offers several grants to the arts community of the District but, DCCAH Executive Director, Gloria Naudin, said many artists East of the River remain under-represented among applicants.

“It’s important for us to reach all artists in every art form throughout the city and all non-profit organizations, especially arts-based non-profits serving D.C. residents,” Naudin said.

“We aim to solicit as many folks as possible to engage in our arts funding to grow the District’s vision for the arts to become a world-class cultural destination.”

Samuel Moye, 23, of Alexandria, Va., said that despite being aware of grants, his unwillingness to come off “stupid” on forms kept him from applying for funds to paint. A self-taught painter, working in oils on canvass, Moye attempted the grant process on three separate occasions while living in the Shipley Terrace area of Southeast, only to give up. Moye considered the structure of applications confusing, grew frustrated and walked away from the funding.

“I complained a lot about the grant process in D.C. for artists because I couldn’t figure out the applications and I felt like there was too much writing required. How do you say what you have to say in a way that other people, who may not be from where you are from, hear you and understand you?” Moye asked.

According to Naudin, being intimidated by the process is not uncommon, though DCCAH has established measures to make the applicants more comfortable with the process itself, as well as asking for the help they need.

“The first step an applicant should take is to review the Commission’s Guide to Grants found on our Web site to see all of the different opportunities offered for artists and start thinking about where their work fits best,” Naudin said.

“We've been really focused this year on making the applications easier for artists to fill out. First off, we've altered the process so that they can apply online and only submit one hard copy of the application, rather than the 10 cumbersome copies that the Agency has required in the past. The applications have also been distilled into a question and answer format, with the objective of assisting applicants to address the key questions that panelists have when they review applications,” Naudin said.

Naudin said that the Commission also offers specialized services to applicants, including having staff available to read draft applications and work one-on-one with artists through “Workshop Wednesdays,” where staff members provide a thorough overview of all of the opportunities DCCAH offers. The service is available both in person and through Webinar.

Additionally, DCCAH has opened a new resource center located in their offices in Northwest, where computers, printers and scanners are available to applicants from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

“The most important thing for an artist to know is that they do not have to go through the process alone. We have many staff members who are dedicated to the grant-making that DCCAH does and they are always available to answer questions,” Naudin said.

“It’s also important for applicants to know that the process is competitive and they need to bring their best art and best ideas to their applications.”

Though Moye now resides outside of the District, he is certain the new grant procedures and artist-friendly applications will help other artists take advantage of funding opportunities.

“The benefits will be overwhelming to artists who may feel the way I did when pulling my thoughts together for the applications,” Moye said. “It is important that DCCAH made these changes because without them, many of the city’s young artists, would miss out.”

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) program
is for undergraduates with exceptional financial need. Pell Grant
recipients with the lowest expected family contributions (EFCs) will
be considered first for a FSEOG. Just like Pell Grants, the FSEOG does
not have to be repaid.
How much can I get?

You can receive between $100 and $4,000 a year, depending on when you
apply, your financial need, the funding at the school you're
attending, and the policies of the financial aid office at your
school.

If I am eligible, how will I get the FSEOG money?

If you're eligible, your school will credit your account, pay you
directly (usually by check), or combine these methods. Your school
must pay you at least once per term (semester, trimester, or quarter).
Schools that do not use semesters, trimesters, or quarters must
disburse funds at least twice per academic year.

Shell Eco-marathon Prizes and Awards

About Shell Eco-marathon
Driving technology innovation for improved energy efficiency
Driving 3000 kilometres per litre seems an unlikely distance, but that is the standard of fuel economy that the teams competing in the Shell Eco-marathon project will be trying to match
The Shell Eco-marathon... challenges students around the world to design, build, and test vehicles that travel further using less energy.

is an educational platform that encourages innovation, reinforces conservation and fosters the development of leading technology for greater energy efficiency.
is a global forum for current and future leaders who are passionate about finding sustainable solutions to the world’s energy challenge.

is a visible demonstration of Shell's deep commitment to face head-on the growing demand for energy worldwide in a responsible way. It is an invitation to others to do the same.

The Shell Eco-marathon began in 1939 at a Shell research laboratory in the U.S. as a friendly wager between scientists to see who could get the most miles per gallon from their vehicles. From these humble origins, the organized competition for fuel economy evolved and moved to Europe. The Shell Eco-marathon in its current form began in 1985 in France, attracting thousands of young engineers and scientists from 20 European countries. The Shell Eco-marathon Americas was first held at the California Speedway in 2007.

The principle of the Shell Eco-marathon is simple: to design and build a vehicle that uses the least amount of fuel to travel the farthest distance. At all events, teams can enter futuristic prototypes: streamlined vehicles where the only design consideration is reducing drag and maximizing efficiency. In Europe, there is also the category of more realistic “UrbanConcept” vehicles, designed to meet the needs of today’s drivers. Conventional fuels such as diesel, petrol/gasoline and liquid petroleum gas, as well as alternatives like GTL, solar, ethanol, hydrogen and biofuels can power the vehicles. As long as teams adhere to safety rules, the design of their vehicles is limited only by their imagination.

Registration Online registration will begin in July 2009. In the meantime, please register your interest to participate, and we will keep you in our mailing list for updates.
Be sure to check back here regularly over the coming months in order not to miss out on the 2010 Shell Eco-marathon Asia.

New Zealand Development Scholarships

Development scholarships
The New Zealand Development Scholarships (NZDS) scheme offers the opportunity to people from selected developing countries to undertake development-related studies in New Zealand.
This may include study related to education, health, rural livelihoods, governance, human rights, or economic development, depending on the human resource development training needs of the home government.
New Zealand -Development Scholarships are offered for full-time, tertiary level study at participating New Zealand education institutions.
The NZDS scheme has two categories:

New Zealand Development Scholarships – Public category (NZDS-Public)
The NZDS-Public scholarships scheme is a bilateral scheme available to individuals from selected partner countries in
Southeast Asia and the Pacific. The selection criteria is determined by the partner government and NZAID.
Shortlisted applications, mostly from public sector employees, are endorsed for a scholarship by the partner government. Employees from civil society or private sector organisations may apply for the NZDS-Public in some countries depending on country-specific selection criteria. The levels and fields of study available for study in New Zealand are determined according to the partner country’s human resource development training needs.

New Zealand Development Scholarships – Open category (NZDS-Open)
The NZDS-Open scholarships scheme is a non-bilateral scheme available to candidates of some developing countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Pacific. Under the NZDS-Open scheme, candidates independently apply for a scholarship.

NZDS-Open scholarships are generally directed at employees of private sector or civil society sector organisations, including non-governmental organisations. In some countries, public sector employees can also apply for a NZDS-Open scholarship depending on the country or region-specific selection criteria. This criteria also determines the levels and the fields of study under which candidates can apply to study in New Zealand.
