IBM Ph.D. Fellowship Awards for the 2011-2012

The IBM Ph.D. Fellowship program for the 2011-2012 academic year is now accepting nominations.

About the program

The IBM Ph.D. Fellowship Awards Program is an intensely competitive worldwide program, which honors exceptional Ph.D. students who have an interest in solving problems that are important to IBM and fundamental to innovation in many academic disciplines and areas of study. These include: computer science and engineering, electrical and mechanical engineering, physical sciences (including chemistry, material sciences, and physics), mathematical sciences (including analytics, statistics, operations research, and optimization), business sciences (including financial services, risk management, marketing, communications, and learning/knowledge management), and service science, management, and engineering (SSME). Additionally, IBM pays special attention to an array of focus areas. For details on the focus areas, see frequently asked questions.

Preference will be given to students who have had an IBM internship or have closely collaborated with technical or services people from IBM.

The IBM Ph.D. Fellowship Awards program also supports our long-standing commitment to workforce diversity. IBM values diversity in the workplace and encourages nominations of women, minorities and all who contribute to that diversity.

Program scope

The IBM Ph.D. Fellowships are awarded worldwide. IBM Ph.D. Fellows are awarded a stipend for one academic year. Fellowships vary by country/geography and the students will be informed at the time of the award what the value is for their country/geography.

All IBM Ph.D. Fellows are matched with an IBM Mentor according to their technical interests, and they are strongly encouraged to participate in at least one internship at IBM while completing their studies. Interns are paid by their host site and will be subject to the prevailing terms and conditions of the internship program at that site. IBM is an equal opportunity employer.

After receiving an award, an Award Recipient may be renominated the following year for consideration to receive another IBM Ph.D. Fellowship, based on the Award Recipient's continued exceptional academic standing, progress and achievement, and sustained interaction with IBM's technical community. A student may compete annually and be awarded a maximum of three years. IBM requests that a maximum of two nominations per department be submitted, in addition to any renewal nominations.

Eligibility

Students must be nominated by a faculty member. The faculty member is encouraged to contact an IBM colleague prior to submitting the nomination to assure mutual interest. They must be enrolled full-time in a college or university Ph.D. program, and they must have completed at least one year of study in their doctoral program at the time of their nomination. (Eligibility in Europe and Russia is described below.) Students from U.S. embargoed countries are not eligible for the program. Award Recipients will be selected based on their overall potential for research excellence, the degree to which their technical interests align with those of IBM, and their academic progress to-date, as evidenced by publications and endorsements from their faculty advisor and department head. While students may accept other supplemental fellowships, to be eligible for the IBM Ph.D. Fellowship Award they may not accept a major fellowship in addition to the IBM Ph.D. Fellowship.

Eligibility in Europe and Russia: Students must be nominated by a doctoral faculty member. The faculty member is encouraged to contact an IBM colleague prior to submitting the nomination to assure mutual interest. They must be enrolled full-time in a college or university Ph.D. program, and they may be nominated in their first year of study in their doctoral program. Students from U.S. embargoed countries are not eligible for the program. Award Recipients will be selected based on their overall potential for research excellence, the degree to which their technical interests align with those of IBM, and their academic progress to-date, as evidenced by publications and endorsements from their faculty advisor and department head. While students may accept government scholarships and other supplemental fellowships, to be eligible for the IBM Ph.D. Fellowship Award they may not accept a major fellowship in addition to the IBM Ph.D. Fellowship.

Q: Where can I get the forms for an IBM Ph.D. Fellowship nomination?

A: All nominations for the IBM Ph.D. Fellowship must be submitted by faculty electronically over the Web on a standardized form so as to facilitate an open and uniform competition. PhD Scholarship in Bubbles, Drops and Fluids at the Nanoscale

Project Title: Bubbles, Drops and Fluids at the Nanoscale

Ever wondered how the foam on a cappuccino (or a pint of Guinness) lasts so long? Why surf in the ocean is foamy, but waves in a river are not? How ink is removed from paper during recycling? How perfectly uniform microdrops are made in a microfluidic device? How the texture of foods and cosmetics is controlled? How inkjet printers work? The answers to all these questions, and many more, depend on how bubbles and drops that are suspended in a liquid interact with each other or with other materials.

When bubbles or drops interact, they come very close together so that a very thin layer – perhaps only nanometres thick – of liquid remains between them. The properties of that liquid film, and the surface properties of the bubbles or drops, are critically important in determining whether the film remains intact, or whether it ruptures so that the bubbles or drops coalesce. These properties are affected in subtle and sometimes mysterious ways by solutes present in the liquid. This project, funded by an Australian Research Council Discovery grant, is all about understanding the properties of very thin liquid films and the surface properties at the boundaries of the film. One of the key questions is whether a phenomenon known as hydrodynamic slippage occurs at the surface of a bubble or a drop under particular conditions. Hydrodynamic slip is very important in a number of areas including modern microfluidic and nanofluidic devices, and yet it remains controversial and poorly understood.

The applicant
The applicant should be a graduate in physical chemistry or physics, but alternative backgrounds including other branches of chemistry, nanotechnology, biotechnology, materials science, or chemical engineering, may also be suitable. You will need experience in conducting experiments in a scientific laboratory, attention to detail and cleanliness, curiosity, willingness to learn, and a can-do attitude.

Applicants must hold at least an upper second class Honours degree in a relevant discipline from an Australian university, or equivalent award and/or experience. For applicants with degrees from outside Australia, this means demonstrating that you have had research training plus some experience of conducting a research project and have written a thesis, a publication, or a report describing the research outcomes. A masters degree with at least one semester of research would usually meet these requirements.

The supervisor
Recently appointed as Director of Research Training at Deakin University in Melbourne, Professor Roger Horn graduated in physics from Monash University, and completed his PhD at Cambridge. He is known internationally for his pioneering work with Prof Jacob Israelachvili on developing methods for direct measurement of surface forces and investigations into the structural and flow properties of thin liquid films at the molecular level. Prof Horn is an experienced PhD supervisor who is widely respected for the quality of his research. His 70 journal publications have been cited over 5000 times.

The laboratory
Prof Horn is establishing a new research laboratory to investigate the properties of liquid interfaces and thin liquid films. This scholarship will support a PhD student to join a small research team in the new laboratory, which is based at the Burwood campus of Deakin University in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. The new lab will be associated with one of Deakin’s strongest research concentrations, the Institute for Technology Research and Innovation.

The scholarship
Stipend - The scholarships each provide a tax-free stipend of $27,222 AUD per year (currently 1 AUD is about $US 0.90).

Duration - The scholarship will be for 3 years, with the candidate to remain enrolled full-time unless there are particular circumstances that require part-time enrolment. Generally candidates would aim to complete their PhD in 3 years of full-time study, but they can remain enrolled for up to 4 years.

Tuition Fees - No tuition fees are charged for PhD candidates who are citizens or permanent residents of Australia, or citizens of New Zealand. Other candidates would be liable to a tuition fee for each year of study up to four years. The fee for 2011 is $23,900 AUD. However, there is a possibility that a tuition award would also be available for a well-qualified international applicant, so please don’t see the fee as a barrier to applying for one of these PhD scholarships.

Further details of the scholarship are provided in the Terms and Conditions.

Master Degree Clarendon Scholarship at Oxford

Scholarships are awarded to academically excellent students with the best proven and future potential. Clarendon Scholarships are highly competitive, with less than 10% of applicants selected for the scholarship. Scholarships cover tuition and college fees in full and a generous grant for living expenses, and are open to students starting a new course at Oxford.

Whilst there are no quotas by course type, the majority of Clarendon scholars are working towards a DPhil (PhD). Scholarships are also awarded for 2-year graduate degrees (MPhil/BPhil/MLitt) or 1-year degrees (MSc/MSt/MBA/MFE).

A distinguishing feature of Clarendon scholarships is that scholars are selected from the leaders in their field - that is, academic departments nominate whom they believe are the most deserving of their place at the University of Oxford based on their academic record and ability to contribute significantly to their field of study, both in the present and future. This feature ensures the best and brightest minds are selected as Clarendon scholars.

Selection criteria vary slightly depending on the subject area and whether applicants apply for a taught or research degree, but include:

* An excellent academic record is essential: A first class honours degree or its equivalent (a GPA score of at least 3.7 if the mark is out of 4) or an outstanding academic record at Master's level is necessary. Other indicators of high academic achievement may include individual marks on student transcripts; evidence of previous university prizes or awards; information on your overall position within your cohort; and publications (if applicable).
* Aptitude for the proposed course of study: This may be assessed by reviewing academic references, the research proposal, demonstrated evidence of aptitude for research, and the likelihood the scholar will contribute significantly to their field of study.
* Student motivation: This is assessed through evidence of the applicant's commitment to their proposed course, evaluated by the personal statement and referees' reports.

The closing date is the same as the January application deadline for submitting a graduate admissions application to the University (7 January 2011 for Medical Sciences and Philosophy; 14 January 2011 for Said Business School applicants; 21 January 2011 for all other subjects).

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years of service in the U.S. Senate.

The purpose of the Foundation is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields.

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Program was created to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering and to foster excellence in those fields.

In awarding scholarships, the Foundation Board of Trustees will consider the nominee's field of study and career objectives and the extent to which that individual has the commitment and potential to make a significant contribution to his or her field.

Nominees for Goldwater Scholarships must include in their online application a statement of interest in a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering, detailing how their academic program and their overall educational plans will prepare them for their chosen career goal. It is expected that students selected as scholars will pursue advanced degrees.

Students who plan to study medicine are eligible for a Goldwater Scholarship only if they plan a research career rather than a career as a medical doctor in a private practice.

The 2011 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship application will launch September 1, 2010
Institution's designated Goldwater Faculty Representative must electronically submit their completed online application(s) for the Goldwater Scholarship by January 31, 2011, 5:00 p.m. central time. Faculty representatives may establish an internal deadline prior to January 27 for all students to have their application completed. Nominations not electronically submitted online by 5:00 p.m. central time on January 31, 2011, will not be considered. Institutions must mail all supporting documents to the Iowa City address by the receipt deadline of February 1, 2011. Customer support will only be available from 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m. central time, Monday–Friday.

Microsoft scholarship in computer science

A Microsoft scholarship provides a leg up so you can pursue undergraduate studies in computer science and related technical disciplines. You’ll join a community of scholarship recipients from the United States, Canada and Mexico who share your passion for technology and academic excellence. It all adds up to achieving your primary goal—making a real difference in the software industry.

Microsoft is offering four different types of technical scholarships for the 2011-2012 academic year to current undergraduate students: General Scholarships, Women's Scholarships, Minority Scholarships, and Scholarships for Students with Disabilities.

Requirements
Basics
If you’re interested in applying for the 2011-2012 academic year scholarships, make sure you postmark your application by February 1, 2011 in order for your application to be considered. Microsoft selects final candidates based on the following criteria:

* Eligibility
* Quality of application
* Displayed interest in the software industry
* Commitment to leadership
* Financial need

We will be notifying all rewarded scholarship recipients in March 2011. We will strive to contact all applicants about their status, however please note that due to the high number of scholarship applicants, we may only be able to contact candidates who were awarded scholarships.

Diversity at Microsoft
We encourage student populations currently underrepresented in the field of computer science to pursue technical degrees. All candidates who meet the criteria for eligibility described below may certainly apply, while we do award a large majority of our student scholarships to women, minorities, and the disabled. Minority applicants must belong to one of the following groups underrepresented in the software field: African-American, Hispanic, or Native American.

Provisions
As a recipient of one of our scholarships, you’ll enjoy the benefits for one academic year. You may receive either a full or partial scholarship for the 2011-2012 academic year. Full tuition scholarships will cover tuition for the 2011-2012 academic year as posted by the financial aid office at your college or university. Microsoft will make payments to the designated school, and they’re not transferable to other academic institutions. You may use the funds for tuition only—not for other costs listed on your bursar bill, such as room and board.

You’ll also need to apply for a summer internship and if offered an internship, you must complete the salaried summer internship of 12 weeks or more at Microsoft Corporation in Redmond, Washington. (Microsoft reserves the right not to offer an internship position to the scholarship winner if an appropriate match cannot be found.)

Eligibility
To be eligible, you must be enrolled full time in a Bachelor's degree program at a 4-year college or university in the United States, Canada, or Mexico at the time you submit the application. Plus, we’ll need to see that you’re making satisfactory progress toward an undergraduate degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related technical discipline such as electrical engineering, math, or physics—and that you demonstrate an interest in computer science. Because the scholarship is merit based, you must maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average out of a possible 4.0, or a 4.0 cumulative grade point average out of a possible 5.0. For more detailed information regarding eligibility, please read our FAQ.

PhD Scholarship in Marine Survival of Sea Trout

A PhD Scholarship in Marine Survival of Sea Trout is available at the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua) with starting date October 2010.

The project will be carried out in the Section for Freshwater Fisheries Ecology in Silkeborg.

DTU Aqua is an institute at the Technical University of Denmark. The purpose of DTU Aqua is to provide research, advice and education at the highest international level within the sustainable exploitation of living marine and freshwater resources, the biology of aquatic organisms and the development of ecosystems as well as their integration in ecosystem-based management. The institute has an international research staff comprising approx. 90 academic employees.

Project description
A considerable part of the sea trout (Salmo trutta) lifecycle takes place in the marine environment. Basic knowledge on survival and behaviour is relatively well documented in the freshwater phase. Equivalent knowledge in the marine phase is, however, very poorly documented. A significant contributing factor has been methodological problems in addressing this phase.

Recent state of the art development within the field of telemetry has, however, now made it possible to study sea trout behaviour in the marine phase more thoroughly, principally by electronic tagging such as passive integrated tags (PIT), acoustic tags and data storage tags (DST).

By tagging with PIT tags and simple acoustic tags it is possible to monitor when the fish passes a given location. Typically this will be at the outlet of a stream or fjord where the conditions are suitable for setting up the various systems. Concurrently, other tag types, such as DST tags and acoustic oxygen transmitters open the possibility to register information on the surrounding environment of the fish of hitherto unseen resolution.

The present project aims to expand our knowledge base on sea trout behaviour and survival in the marine environment. In addition the project has the potential to provide detailed information on a number of other important life history events, such as timing of upstream and downstream movement migration, run timing of maiden vs repeat spawners, potential correlation between run timing of smolt phase and adult phase etc.

Qualifications
We are looking for a candidate who has:

* Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree, or equivalent, in Aquatic Sciences
* Previous experience in aquatic research
* Proficiency in written and spoken English
* Keen interest in research and for working within the field of aquatic sciences

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.

Further information
For further information about the project contact Senior Research Scientist Kim Aarestrup, (+45) 3588 3142 or Senior Research Scientist Anders Koed, (+45) 3588 3146.

General information may be obtained from Helge Abildhauge Thomsen, (+45) 3588 3020 or Nina Qvistgaard, (+45) 3588 3090.

Application
We must have your online application by 13 September 2010. Please open the link "apply for this job online" and fill in the application form and attach your application, CV and information about academic grades. Applications must include a curriculum vitae and documentation of a completed master's degree including grades. Furthermore, the application must include a vision for the PhD study and for this project in particular.

All interested candidates irrespective of age, gender, race, religion or ethnic background are encouraged to apply.

The purpose of DTU Aqua is to provide research, advice and education at the highest international level within the sustainable exploitation of living marine and freshwater resources, the biology of aquatic organisms and the dynamics of ecosystems as well as their integration in ecosystem-based management. DTU Aqua has 280 employees, of whom a third are scientific staff.
