Thiel Foundation will award up to $100,000

What is the Thiel Fellowship?

The Thiel Foundation will award up to 20 people under 20 years old cash grants of $100,000 to further their innovative scientific and technical ideas. In addition, over a two year period, our network of tech entrepreneurs and philanthropists—drawn from PayPal, Facebook, Palantir Technologies, Founders Fund, the Singularity Institute, the Seasteading Institute, and others—will teach the recipients about creating disruptive technologies and offer mentorship, employment opportunities, support, and training.

Though applicants may already have in mind scientific or technical ideas, the Thiel Fellowship is not limited to those with developed innovations. The purpose of the Fellowship is broad: the grants are intended to enable the recipients to achieve a specific objective, produce a report or other similar project, or improve or enhance a scientific, technical, or charitable capacity, skill, or talent.

Teams of up to four persons may also apply. Each member of a selected team would receive the full fellowship; therefore, each team member must fill out the application and the team will be judged on the strength of all members.

Applications must be submitted by December 31, 2010
. Applicants must be under 20 years old as of December 15, 2010. Applicants may be from anywhere in the world, except from certain countries whose residents are banned by the United States Government from participation. There will be no limitations or restrictions in the selection criteria or procedures based on race, religion, national or ethnic origin, or other illegally discriminatory criteria in any grants made for Thiel Fellowships. Applications and entries will be subject to the Official Rules, which applicants must read and agree to, and which can be found here.

The Foundation will begin announcing Fellows as early as January 2011. Fellowships must be accepted within one week of being offered. Offers to teams may be contingent on all members accepting. All members of a team must accept the fellowship, or the others may forfeit eligibility. Recipients may begin their two-year fellowship at any point in 2011. If currently a student, a recipient must stop active enrollment in school during the fellowship. During the two-year fellowship, recipients should not have any other employment or educational enrollment except as approved by the Thiel Foundation.

Recipients are urged, though not required, to move to California in order to take full advantage of the mentoring, support, and training opportunities of the Foundation’s partners. Visas may be sponsored by the Thiel Foundation. Recipients are responsible for paying their own taxes. Recipients are responsible for arranging and managing their own housing and living expenses. The fellowships will be awarded in two payments: one at the beginning of the first year, and the remainder during the second year. The Foundation reserves the right to accelerate the award schedule or modify the Thiel Fellowship.

During the fellowship, regular status reporting will be required. This may include written status reports, access to research and project activities, and review meetings with advisors.

The program is not open to candidates from Ukraine and Belarus, in spite of them being on the DAC list of ODA recipients. These citizens should instead apply for scholarship through the Visby Program.

In category one the Swedish Institute has the opportunity to offer approximately 50 scholarships. 2. PhD studies: a long-term PhD research visit of 6 or 12 months.
Scholarship benefits

The scholarship amounts to SEK 12,000 per month for PhD students and SEK 15,000 for postdoctoral researchers.

Eligibility
The scholarships are intended for guest students or researchers belonging to any of the above mentioned countries and target groups, applying for full-time temporary studies/research in Sweden. There is no age limit for the scholarship holders.

Please note that to be eligible for a scholarship at PhD level you must be enrolled in ongoing PhD studies at your home university.

Please also note that to be eligible for a scholarship at Postdoctoral level you must be holder of a PhD degree, preferably from 2006 or later.

    * You have a Swedish permanent residence permit.
    * You have a Swedish work permit and you are not an EU citizen.

Candidates from the following countries will receive a lump-sum of SEK 5,000: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia.

Only representatives of Finnish universities who wish to host foreign scholarship holders and commit to shared goals with them are eligible to apply for the scholarship. Upon a successful application by the host, a personal scholarship is awarded to the foreign post-graduate student or young researcher. Post-doctorate research will not be funded.

There is a rolling deadline. Applications must be submitted at least 3 months before the proposed scholarship period. Decisions will be made within approximately 2 months after receipt of application.

PhD Scholarship Role of the ribosomal DNA repeats in chromosome segregation

PhD Scholarship: Role of the ribosomal DNA repeats in chromosome segregation

Organisms must ensure their chromosomes separate faithfully during division. Failure to do so can result in chromosome nondisjunction and cause disorders, notably Down syndrome in humans. While understanding the systems that bring about faithful chromosome segregation is an area of intense investigation, relatively little is known about whether genomic factors impede segregation. The goal of your project will be to test a novel hypothesis: that the ribosomal DNA repeats (rDNA) are an impediment to accurate chromosome segregation.

The rDNA is a distinctive feature of eukaryote genomes. It forms large tracts of tandemly repeated cistrons (from fifty to many thousands of copies) that occupy the nucleolus and encode the major RNA components of the ribosome. The rDNA is the most heavily-transcribed region of the genome but also has numerous “extra-coding” functions. Several observations suggest that some of these extra-coding functions may make the rDNA refractory to proper chromosome segregation.

In order to test this novel hypothesis, you will use the model genetic organism, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, to investigate the genetic pathways that might result in the rDNA impeding proper chromosome segregation. In particular, you will develop assays to follow meiotic chromosome segregation.  You will use mutants in pathways involved in rDNA recombination, rDNA replication timing, cohesin/condensin, and meiotic recombination in conjunction with these assays to determine which pathway(s) are involved in rDNA-mediated chromosome missegregation.

Applicants should have a background in genetics, cell biology, molecular biology, or related subjects. But most of all, you should have a deep desire to explore the inner workings of the cell.

The research will be carried out in the lab of Dr. Austen Ganley in the Institute of Natural Sciences at Massey University on the Albany Campus, in Auckland. You will join a lab that is dedicated to exploring how the rDNA repeats influence the biology of the cell. We work in a laboratory space that is shared between three research groups, and thus is a dynamic and vibrant working environment. The lab is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for yeast genetic research.

The research will be funded by the Marsden fund, the pre-eminent basic research fund in New Zealand. The scholarship offers a stipend of NZ$25,000/annum, plus tuition fees.

Requests for further information about this research project should be directed to:

PhD Scholarship in Bubbles, Drops and Fluids at the Nanoscale

Project Title: Bubbles, Drops and Fluids at the Nanoscale

Ever wondered how the foam on a cappuccino (or a pint of Guinness) lasts so long? Why surf in the ocean is foamy, but waves in a river are not? How ink is removed from paper during recycling? How perfectly uniform microdrops are made in a microfluidic device? How the texture of foods and cosmetics is controlled? How inkjet printers work? The answers to all these questions, and many more, depend on how bubbles and drops that are suspended in a liquid interact with each other or with other materials.

When bubbles or drops interact, they come very close together so that a very thin layer – perhaps only nanometres thick – of liquid remains between them. The properties of that liquid film, and the surface properties of the bubbles or drops, are critically important in determining whether the film remains intact, or whether it ruptures so that the bubbles or drops coalesce. These properties are affected in subtle and sometimes mysterious ways by solutes present in the liquid. This project, funded by an Australian Research Council Discovery grant, is all about understanding the properties of very thin liquid films and the surface properties at the boundaries of the film. One of the key questions is whether a phenomenon known as hydrodynamic slippage occurs at the surface of a bubble or a drop under particular conditions. Hydrodynamic slip is very important in a number of areas including modern microfluidic and nanofluidic devices, and yet it remains controversial and poorly understood.

    The applicant
The applicant should be a graduate in physical chemistry or physics, but alternative backgrounds including other branches of chemistry, nanotechnology, biotechnology, materials science, or chemical engineering, may also be suitable. You will need experience in conducting experiments in a scientific laboratory, attention to detail and cleanliness, curiosity, willingness to learn, and a can-do attitude.

Applicants must hold at least an upper second class Honours degree in a relevant discipline from an Australian university, or equivalent award and/or experience. For applicants with degrees from outside Australia, this means demonstrating that you have had research training plus some experience of conducting a research project and have written a thesis, a publication, or a report describing the research outcomes. A masters degree with at least one semester of research would usually meet these requirements.

    The supervisor
Recently appointed as Director of Research Training at Deakin University in Melbourne, Professor Roger Horn graduated in physics from Monash University, and completed his PhD at Cambridge. He is known internationally for his pioneering work with Prof Jacob Israelachvili on developing methods for direct measurement of surface forces and investigations into the structural and flow properties of thin liquid films at the molecular level. Prof Horn is an experienced PhD supervisor who is widely respected for the quality of his research. His 70 journal publications have been cited over 5000 times.

    The laboratory
Prof Horn is establishing a new research laboratory to investigate the properties of liquid interfaces and thin liquid films. This scholarship will support a PhD student to join a small research team in the new laboratory, which is based at the Burwood campus of Deakin University in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. The new lab will be associated with one of Deakin’s strongest research concentrations, the Institute for Technology Research and Innovation.

    The scholarship
Stipend - The scholarships each provide a tax-free stipend of $27,222 AUD per year (currently 1 AUD is about $US 0.90).

Duration - The scholarship will be for 3 years, with the candidate to remain enrolled full-time unless there are particular circumstances that require part-time enrolment. Generally candidates would aim to complete their PhD in 3 years of full-time study, but they can remain enrolled for up to 4 years.

Tuition Fees - No tuition fees are charged for PhD candidates who are citizens or permanent residents of Australia, or citizens of New Zealand. Other candidates would be liable to a tuition fee for each year of study up to four years. The fee for 2011 is $23,900 AUD. However, there is a possibility that a tuition award would also be available for a well-qualified international applicant, so please don’t see the fee as a barrier to applying for one of these PhD scholarships.

Further details of the scholarship are provided in the Terms and Conditions.
