General description

The ERMA is a Master programme intended for students that would combine practical experience in human rights issues with further academic study. After recognizing that human rights go across the disciplines of study, as political science, law, sociology, philosophy and social sciences in general, the Programme has adopted an interdisciplinary approach. The Master Programme promotes development and realisation of young generation of officials for state management, inter-governmental and non-governmental organisations, for universities and think tanks in Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro and Kosovo as well as in the countries belonging to the EU, the rest of Europe, and worldwide. The structure of the lectures, the access to internships and the Faculty are defined in order to emphasize among the participants a shared consciousness that the democratic development and human rights promotion, protection and implementation in the region depend on plurality of factors. Most of the relevant issues in the SEE stability, democracy, and development are mutually correlated and influence each other. Thus, a common regional effort in achieving them will have more chance for success in a context of inclusive policies and in the framework of a rapid European Union integration process.

The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Academy of Society (MGMAS) started a trust fund in 1962; in the name of Gandhi Smarak Nidhi Fund (GSNF) that was to assist in development of higher education in East Africa. Scholaship Postgraduate Scholarship on Social Transformation and International Migration

University of Sydney

Title : Postgraduate Scholarship on Social Transformation and International Migration

Research Areas : Humanities & Social Sciences

Type : Postgraduate Research

Description:

Professor Stephen Castles, Research Chair in Sociology, is seeking up to three outstanding doctoral candidates to carry out PhD research commencing 2011 semester 1, linked to the ARC-funded research project ‘Social Transformation and International Migration in the 21st Century’. This five-year project will re-examine the theoretical and methodological basis of international migration research.
The Project: The starting point for the project is the assumption that human mobility is a normal part of social life. At times of rapid change international migration tends to grow in volume and to become increasingly important as a factor helping to reshape societies. Migration is thus not just a result of change nor a cause of change, but an integral part of social transformation processes. This project is interdisciplinary, and is designed to explore linkages across socio-spatial levels.  Global factors are conceptualised as having varying effects in different places, because they are mediated by local and national historical experiences and cultural patterns. An interdisciplinary approach can link the insights of micro-level research in sociology, anthropology and cultural studies, with the more macro-level analyses of economics, politics, political economy, law and geography. The project has three phases:
  1. Theoretical and conceptual work to improve understanding of the relationship between social transformation and migration
  2. Fieldwork in regions strongly affected by both social transformation and migration: Mexico and Ghana as predominantly origin regions for migrants and the Republic of Korea and Australia as predominantly destination regions
  3. The national and local case study findings will be used to revise and rethink the conceptual framework
The project leader, Prof. Castles is an internationally renowned scholar in the field of global migration - see profile at: http://www.arts.usyd.edu.au/departs/ssp/staff/profiles/stephen_castles.shtml
Successful applicants will be expected to participate in the theoretical and methodological work of the project and in at least one of the case studies. There may also be opportunities for periods as visiting researchers, both in the fieldwork countries and at leading migration research centres at the University of Oxford and elsewhere.

Eligibility:

Applicants should have the following attributes:
  1. A  good honours or masters degree in a relevant social science (this may be sociology or another appropriate discipline)
  2. Strong research and analytical skills as demonstrated through publications, writing samples or the equivalent
  3. Strong interest in international migration and familiarity with literature and debates in this field
  4. Good written and verbal communications skills and ability to work in a team
  5. Knowledge of the language, culture and society of at least one of the fieldwork areas
Applicants who are eligible to apply for APA/UPA scholarships in 2011, Semester 1 must apply for these scholarships. These scholarships will open for application in late August 2010 and close on 29 October 2010. APA/UPA application details can be found at http://www.usyd.edu.au/ro/training/postgraduate_awards.shtml

D. degree cabdidates in the fields of scince and technology and each applicant must be recommended by a senior staff at their home university as a potential cabdidate for international reasearch collaboration after graduation. Each grantee receives full financial support to study Japanese for six months after arrival. The Foundation funds tour programs every year to visit various location in the fields of industry, science technology, research, culture, history, society and nature so that the grantees’ experience and understanding during their stay in Japan will not be limited to one campus.

    Application and Screening

    1. Applicants to all programs must be faculty members at one of the eligible universities.
    2. English will be the common language used in most of the international conferences. Therefore,we strongly suggest that applicants have a good knowledge of English as a communication tool. A TOEFL score of 530 or above is preferred.

    7. Interviews with candidates shall be carried out individually, usually at candidates’ home universities, during the period from January to April.
    8. One of the most important points for evaluation is why the university has nominated the candidate and what kind of scenario the department or faculty has for the candidate in terms of academic collaboration after graduation. If the applicant’s department or faculty has been implementing specific cooperation/collaboration with the laboratory of the proposed host professor in Japan, this will receive positive consideration in the screening of the candidate.
