UNITY UN- 2011 Global Reporting Fellowships

UNITY: Journalists of Color is teaming up with the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) to offer unique international reporting opportunities to young journalists from its alliance partners.

The June 8-10 UN High-Level meeting on AIDS will be among the most important to take place in recent years around AIDS issues where world leaders will take stock of global response after 30 years and remember the human toll of the epidemic – the 25 million people who have died of AIDS. The leaders also will renew commitments and agree on innovative strategies to achieve a world free of HIV infections, AIDS-related deaths and stigma of discrimination.

The meeting will feature speeches by global leaders, including the Secretary General, presidents and royalty. There will also be performances by popular musicians.

The gathering presents an excellent opportunity for young journalists interested in honing their skills in international affairs, especially at a time when many news organizations in the United States are reducing international reporting.

UNITY will bring two young journalists from each partner organization to the United Nations from June 6 – 11 to report on the High Level meeting. They will be joined by four young journalists from Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe. The journalists will work collaboratively to produce print, online and broadcast reports during the meeting under the guidance of professional journalists from alliance partners and the Inter Press Service, the developing world’s leading provider of information on global issues.

The journalists must be between the ages of 21 and 30 and working in print, broadcast or online. They must be either working full-time or students training to become journalists. Australian Development Scholarships

The Australian Development Scholarships program is part of the Australia Awards initiative announced by the Australian Prime Minister in November 2009. The Australia Awards have been established to maximise the benefit to Australia of its extensive scholarship programs, and to support enduring ties between Australia and our neighbours.

The Australia Awards will bring together the international development awards administered by AusAID and the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations’ Endeavour Awards under a single recognisable brand. More information on Australia Awards

Australian Development Scholarships is the principal mechanism by which Australia provides scholarship assistance for individuals from developing countries to undertake studies at Australian education institutions.

In Pakistan, the program aims to improve sustainable, pro-poor service delivery and governance. It has been redesigned in consultation with the Government of Pakistan to increasingly align its objectives with Pakistan’s development priorities. Future awards will focus in particular on the following priority sectors:

    * maternal, neonatal and child health services
    * basic education services
    * rural development and food security
    * governance

The program also targets public sector reform and improved standards of governance in both public and private sectors.

The aim is to improve technical and leadership capacity of men and women working in federal and provincial governments, non-profit civil society, and the private sector.

Priority will be given to applicants from Baluchistan, Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), formerly the Northwest Frontier Province.

Under this program, the Australian Government offers Masters-level (only) scholarships which are announced early each year. For information on how to apply for ADS, click here.

All applicants have to ensure they fall under one of the four Scholar Profiles and meet Profile specific eligibility criteria along with the general suitability criteria.

Deadline : 08 April 2011
