PhD Scholarship in High Efficiency Bi-directional DC/ DC Converters

A PhD scholarship on high efficiency bi-directional DC/DC converters at the Institute of Technology and Innovation is available for a three-year period. The scholarship is funded by SE (Syd Energi) and the Danfoss Foundation. Bi-directional power flow is often desirable in high power DC/DC converters for applications such as charging and discharging of batteries, emergency load balancing of aircraft power busses, reduction of power transients by means of parallel power processing in traction applications etc.

Provided conversion efficiency is not sacrificed, the use of bi-directional converters can substitute two individual converters thereby significantly reduce overall cost and size. The objective of this PhD project is to study and demonstrate the maximum achievable conversion efficiency in high power bi-directional DC/DC converters. The research work will include: Detailed analysis of converter topologies, selection of power semiconductors, design of power transformer and inductor, design of input- and output filters, design of controller, prototyping and experimental verification. The qualified applicant holds a Master’s Degree in Electronics engineering or Power engineering and has a strong interest and background in power electronics, magnetic design and control engineering. The successful applicant will be enrolled as a PhD student at the PhD School at the Faculty of Engineering within the Research Training Program of Robotics. For further information please contact Associated Professor Morten Nymand, tel.: +45 6550 7427, e-mail: mny@iti.sdu.dk

Application, salary, etc.:
