Harvard Financial Aid Initiative

We have a long tradition of removing economic barriers for students who want to attend Harvard. Announced in 2004, The Harvard Financial Aid Initiative (HFAI) is a continuation of this tradition and greatly expands financial aid to families who earn less than $80,000. And, if your family earns less than $65,000 per year, your parents pay nothing for you to attend Harvard. It is simply our effort to make sure you and your family know you can afford to attend Harvard.
There is no special application or qualification necessary—just apply for financial aid when you apply for admission. Applying for financial aid does not hinder your chances for admission.
HFAI serves as a touchstone for individuals looking to learn more about the application and financial aid process.

NSF Earth Sciences Postdoctoral Fellowships (EAR-PF)

The Division of Earth Sciences (EAR) awards Postdoctoral Fellowships to recent recipients of doctoral degrees to carry out an integrated program of independent research and education. The research and education plans of each fellowship must address scientific questions within the scope of EAR disciplines. The program supports researchers for a period of up to two years with fellowships that can be taken to the institution of their choice (including facilities abroad). The program is intended to recognize beginning investigators of significant potential, and provide them with research experience, mentorship, and training that will establish them in leadership positions in the Earth Sciences community. Medical Monitoring Fellowship--CDC

Project Description:
A fellowship opportunity is available within the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The National HIV/AIDs Surveillance System (NHSS) collects a core set of information on the characteristics of persons diagnosed with HIV infection and AIDS in all US states and dependent areas. Since 2004, the Medical Monitoring Project (MMP) has supplemented this core surveillance data with interview and medical record abstraction carried out on the only nationally representative sample of HIV-infected persons in care.  MMP data are used to illuminate issues concerning the HIV-positive in-care population ranging from describing racial disparities in viral load suppression to exploring the prevalence of depression and its effect on antiretroviral adherence.

As of April 2008, the NHSS employed name-based HIV case reporting in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and 6 dependent areas. The roster of names compiled by case surveillance includes all diagnosed HIV-infected persons both in and out of care. As a result, in 2015, MMP will implement a new sampling strategy that will include all HIV-diagnosed persons.  The inclusion of all HIV-diagnosed persons will increase our understanding of issues surrounding testing and linkage to care leading to more effective interventions.

This fellowship offers the opportunity to work on a high-priority, high-impact issue in domestic HIV/AIDS surveillance.  With 23 state and metropolitan project areas throughout the United States, MMP provides crucial data from the only nationally representative sample of HIV-infected persons in the United States. The fellow will also gain valuable work experience at CDC with the potential for continuing on at the agency depending on availability of funds and/or positions.

Potential activities include:

Serve as liaison to data management teams in carrying out their activities for this project, i.e. collection and quality assurance of a sophisticated relational system of interview, medical record, and other datasets.
Perform ad hoc data analyses of data for quality assurance and other purposes.
Analyze data and present findings in document, PowerPoint, or oral form. Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journal. Help develop and coordinate activities for local data dissemination (Fact Sheets, HIV awareness days, etc.) including production layout, data runs, production of SAS code.
Assist in the development of analysis training documents for complex sample surveys.
Track local and national data dissemination.
Assist in the review of the methodology reports, which document non-response bias analyses and weighting procedures.
Assist in the development of documents describing MMP’s weighting methodology.
Assist in the development of methods manuscripts.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.

Qualifications:
Doctoral (PhD, MD, etc.) or Master’s degree in a related field required.
Strong data management and/or data analysis experience (SAS) preferred.
Experience in scientific writing preferred.
Some background in epidemiology and/or survey sampling preferred.
Additional experience with SUDAAN, QDS, and/or Microsoft Access would be an asset.

How to Apply:
A complete application consists of:

An application
Transcripts – Click here for detailed information about acceptable transcripts
A current resume/CV, including academic history, employment history, relevant experiences, and publication list
Two educational or professional references
All documents must be in English or include an official English translation.
