SCHOLARSHIP 2008 (JAPANESE STUDIES STUDENTS)

The Japanese Government’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) offers scholarships for academic study in Japan to foreign students interested in deepening their understanding of the Japanese language, Japanese affairs and Japanese culture. The purpose of these scholarships is to promote mutual understanding and deepening friendly ties between Japan and Thailand through the application of advanced knowledge regarding Japan’s language and culture. Regulations for the 2008 MEXT Scholarship Program are as follows:

The Embassy of Japan will annually select approximately 5 Thai students to study at Japanese universities for enhancing their Japanese language abilities and learning Japanese culture and society. Applicants must be Thai and from 18 to 30 years of age and applicants must be undergraduate students majoring in Japanese language or Japanese culture in the university. The term of scholarship is 1 year.

1.QUALIFICATIONS

(1) Nationality Applicants must have the nationality of a country which has diplomatic relations with Japan. An applicant who has Japanese nationality at the time of application is not eligible. Selection is conducted at such facilities as the JapaneseEmbassy located in the country of the applicant’s nationality. (This shall not necessarily be applied in cases where one embassy covers multiple areas.)
(2) Age
Applicants must be born from April 2, 1978 to April 1, 1990.
(3) Academic Background
Applicants must be an undergraduate at a foreign (non-Japanese) university majoring in fields related to Japanese language or Japanese culture at the time of arriving in and leaving Japan.
(4) Academic Records
Applicants’ academics records is no less than 3.10 grade point averages (G.P.A.).
(5) Japanese Language Ability
Applicants must has sufficient Japanese language ability to receive education at Japanese universities in Japanese.
(6) Health
Applicants must be free from any mental or physical disabilities that affect study.
(7) Arrival in Japan
Applicants must be able to arrive definitely in Japan within two weeks counted from the starting day of the study course set by the university (It is October as a general rule) and by the period stipulated by the accepting university (if the applicant cannot arrive in Japan during the set period, travel expenses to Japan will not be paid).
(8) Visa acquisition
Applicants are required to acquire a “College Student” visa when they come to Japan.

* University recommendation is a method where universities recommend overseas students in cooperation with overseas universities with which they have signed inter university exchange agreements, etc.

2. TERM OF SCHOLARSHIP

The term is one year or less from October, 2008 (the starting month for training courses) that is necessary to complete each university’s training course. (Extension of terms is not admitted.)

3. SCHOLARSHIP BENEFITS

(1) Allowance134,000 yen (subject to change) per month will be given to each grantee with the understanding that the scholarship will be cancelled in the case where a grantee takes a leave of absence or is absent from the university for an extended period,in principle.

(3) School Fees Fees for the entrance examination, matriculation and tuition at universities will be paid by the Japanese Government.
