Swiss scholarships for 2010-2011

Every year, the Swiss Federal Government offers a number of scholarships to foreign postgraduate students (Master’s degree holders) only who wish to pursue post-graduate studies in their field of interest at a Swiss university. The scholarships are granted mainly for subjects which can not be studied in the student's country of origin, but are considered important for the
development of the country. Furthermore, they are intended to support graduates whose financial situation does not permit to study abroad.

The candidates must be less than 35 years old (01.01.1975 and younger) and have a good
knowledge of either French, German or Italian (official Swiss languages of university instruction)
in order to be able to follow the courses without difficulties.
The Embassy recommends to study carefully the full information for foreign candidates for a Swiss university scholarship academic year 2010-2011 which can be found at
www.sbf.admin.ch/htm/themen/bildung/stipendien/eskas_en.html
especially the paragraph “Application requirements”.
If you feel after its lecture that you qualify for a scholarship please contact the Embassy in order to
receive the following documents in electronic form:
· Application for a Swiss Government Scholarship
· Medical Certificate
The application file has to be submitted to this Embassy at the latest by 20th November 2009 for the
academic year 2010/2011. Please see the paragraph “Application procedure”.
Applications, which are incomplete or badly prepared, will not be considered!

Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology (PRFB)

The Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO) awards Postdoctoral
Research Fellowships in Biology to recent recipients of the doctoral
degree for research and training in selected areas of biology
supported by BIO and with special goals for human resource development
in biology. The fellowships encourage independence at an early stage
of the research career to permit Fellows to pursue their research and
training goals in the most appropriate research locations regardless
of the availability of funding for the Fellows at that site. For FY
2010, these BIO programs are

(1) Broadening Participation in Biology and

(2) Biological Informatics.

In future years, these areas will change as new scientific and
infrastructure opportunities present themselves; and this solicitation
will be changed to reflect the areas being funded. The fellowships are
also designed to provide active mentoring of the Fellows by the
sponsoring scientists who will benefit from having these talented
young scientists in their research groups. The research and training
plan of each fellowship must address important scientific questions in
contemporary biology within the scope of the BIO Directorate and the
specific guidelines in this fellowship program solicitation. Because
the fellowships are offered only to postdoctoral scientists early in
their careers, doctoral advisors are encouraged to discuss the
availability of BIO fellowships with their graduate students early in
their doctoral programs. Fellowships are awards to individuals, not
institutions, and are administered by the Fellows.

Scholarships for Master's students : Canon Foundation in Europe

Annually, the Canon Foundation in Europe grants up to 15 Fellowships to highly qualified European and Japanese researchers.
The candidates hold a doctorate or at least a Master’s degree. They are eligible during the ten-year period following the successful completion of their PhD or MA degree. Extensions to the ten-year rule are possible in principle in case of exceptional circumstances which should be explained in the application and supporting documents are required. The European Fellowship holders pursue a period of research in Japan whereas the Japanese Fellows do their research at host institutions in Europe. The Fellowships are awarded for periods of minimum three months and maximum one year. The Fellowships are awarded regardless of discipline and existing employment positions.

Canon Fellows from Europe are free to choose their host institutes and hosts in Japan. The same freedom is given to Japanese Canon Fellows coming to Europe. Canon Foundation Research Fellowships may be applied for when an agreement on co-operation and on a research plan has been reached between the guest researcher and the proposed host institution.

Applications can also be submitted by members of commercial, industrial, governmental or professional organisations.
It is strongly recommended that the candidates obtain the current issue of the application form from this website (download it here) or at the Secretariat of the Foundation, in Amstelveen - the Netherlands.

Application procedure for Fellowships
The annual deadline for applications is September 15. Consideration of the applications takes several months. The Selection Committee's final decisions are convened to the applicants before end December of that year. Therefore, the earliest possible date to begin the Fellowship is January 1 of the following year.
Applications should be submitted in full (including the acceptance by the proposed host institute and the research plan) to the Secretariat of the Canon Foundation in Europe well in advance of the deadline.

It is important to note that no correspondence is entered into by the Foundation in regard to decisions taken on any individual application and in view of the large number of applicants, no negative inference should be drawn from the failure of a candidate to secure a Fellowship.

The financial support for Research Fellows ranges from 22,500 Euro to 27,500 Euro per year and pro-rata for different periods. The Canon Foundation gives priority to those who plan to travel to Europe or Japan rather than prolong a current stay.

Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Awards 2010/11

Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Awards (DHPA) are supported by a combination of the UK Research Councils and industry. They are highly prestigious and attract full international tuition fees as well as providing a maintenance stipend (£13,290 in 2009/10) and support towards project expenses. The University is typically allocated between 4-8 awards per academic year.

Eligibility
The scheme is open only to student nationals from:

* India
* China
* Hong Kong
* South Africa
* Brazil
* Russia and the developing world, as defined by the Development Assistance Committee of the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development)

For a full list of eligible countries please refer to the RCUK website

The eligible countries are all those in Part I of the list, plus Russia and Hong Kong. With the exception of Russia and Hong Kong, none of the countries in Part II of the list are eligible.

Successful candidates are expected to hold the equivalent of a UK First Class honours degree and have graduated within the top 5-10% of their academic cohort. Candidates will also be expected to have proven research potential as demonstrated by their contribution to novel research, significant publication output and ability to demonstrate independent research skills and techniques.

It is expected that DHPA candidates must:

* be liable for the international rate of University tuition fee and fall within one of the nationalities eligible for the awards
* be able to demonstrate outstanding research potential and academic achievement
* have not previously studied at PhD or equivalent level (either in the UK or overseas)
* have not have held a DHPA award before
* have established contact with their proposed academic PhD supervisor at Manchester and have their full support for an award
* have submitted a formal PhD application or be holding an offer of study for entry no earlier than September 2009

Applicants must be intending to undertake research within a discipline area rated at grade 5 or 5* in the 2001 UK Government Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). If you are unsure whether your discipline area qualifies for this please contact the Faculty for clarification.

Often Dorothy Hodgkin awards are targeted at nationals from specific countries or working in certain disciplines so academic eligibility alone is not always enough to qualify you for award consideration. Details on such restrictions will be posted on this website as soon as they are known.

Awards are renewable for three to four years of PhD study subject to satisfactory academic progress.

Arts Commission Offers Grants

The D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH) offers several grants to the arts community of the District but, DCCAH Executive Director, Gloria Naudin, said many artists East of the River remain under-represented among applicants.

“It’s important for us to reach all artists in every art form throughout the city and all non-profit organizations, especially arts-based non-profits serving D.C. residents,” Naudin said.

“We aim to solicit as many folks as possible to engage in our arts funding to grow the District’s vision for the arts to become a world-class cultural destination.”

Samuel Moye, 23, of Alexandria, Va., said that despite being aware of grants, his unwillingness to come off “stupid” on forms kept him from applying for funds to paint. A self-taught painter, working in oils on canvass, Moye attempted the grant process on three separate occasions while living in the Shipley Terrace area of Southeast, only to give up. Moye considered the structure of applications confusing, grew frustrated and walked away from the funding.

“I complained a lot about the grant process in D.C. for artists because I couldn’t figure out the applications and I felt like there was too much writing required. How do you say what you have to say in a way that other people, who may not be from where you are from, hear you and understand you?” Moye asked.

According to Naudin, being intimidated by the process is not uncommon, though DCCAH has established measures to make the applicants more comfortable with the process itself, as well as asking for the help they need.

“The first step an applicant should take is to review the Commission’s Guide to Grants found on our Web site to see all of the different opportunities offered for artists and start thinking about where their work fits best,” Naudin said.

“We've been really focused this year on making the applications easier for artists to fill out. First off, we've altered the process so that they can apply online and only submit one hard copy of the application, rather than the 10 cumbersome copies that the Agency has required in the past. The applications have also been distilled into a question and answer format, with the objective of assisting applicants to address the key questions that panelists have when they review applications,” Naudin said.

Naudin said that the Commission also offers specialized services to applicants, including having staff available to read draft applications and work one-on-one with artists through “Workshop Wednesdays,” where staff members provide a thorough overview of all of the opportunities DCCAH offers. The service is available both in person and through Webinar.

Additionally, DCCAH has opened a new resource center located in their offices in Northwest, where computers, printers and scanners are available to applicants from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

“The most important thing for an artist to know is that they do not have to go through the process alone. We have many staff members who are dedicated to the grant-making that DCCAH does and they are always available to answer questions,” Naudin said.

“It’s also important for applicants to know that the process is competitive and they need to bring their best art and best ideas to their applications.”

Though Moye now resides outside of the District, he is certain the new grant procedures and artist-friendly applications will help other artists take advantage of funding opportunities.

“The benefits will be overwhelming to artists who may feel the way I did when pulling my thoughts together for the applications,” Moye said. “It is important that DCCAH made these changes because without them, many of the city’s young artists, would miss out.”

6 PhD or Early Stage Researcher positions Geological Time Scale

The scientific goal of the network is to establish the next generation standard Geological Time Scale with unprecedented accuracy, precision, resolution and stability for the last 100 Myr through integration and intercalibration of state-of-the-art numerical dating. We subdivided the research programme on scientific grounds around three ‘time slices’ tasks: Neogene, Paleogene and Cretaceous.

The Neogene time scale is astronomically dated but this dating needs to be fine-tuned. Radio-isotopic dating of Neogene ash layers is challenging. Comparison with astronomical ages offers excellent opportunities for gaining insight into isotope systematics, such as potential mineral residence times (in U/Pb dating) and the age of mineral dating standards (40Ar/39Ar dating). Evidently, the outcome of the Neogene projects is crucial for the work carried out in the older, Paleogene and late Cretaceous intervals and thus for GTSnext as a whole.

The following positions are still available:

  • 40Ar/39Ar dates for geomagnetic reversal boundaries of the last 3 Myr: what is their real age? (Roskilde University, Denmark)
  • Intercalibrating U-Pb zircon ages of Miocene volcanic ashes with their astronomical and 40Ar/39Ar ages (University of Geneva, Switzerland)
  • New radio-isotopic age constraints to tie floating Paleogene astrochronologies: what is causing hypothermals? (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands)
  • Isotopic ages for the Eocene-Oligocene boundary: insights into the greenhouse-icehouse transition (NERC Isotope Geoscience Laboratory and University of Leicester, United Kingdom)
