PhD Scholarship in Molecular Microbiology

A PhD scholarship in molecular microbiology is available in the group of Associate Professor Jakob Møller-Jensen, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Southern Denmark. The position is to be filled by 1 September 2010 or soon thereafter.

Based on a fluorescence-based genetic screening strategy, termed differential fluorescence induction (DFI) this project aims to identify and characterize genes responsible for the pathogenicity of the important human pathogens Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. This project is a collaboration between the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Southern Denmark and the Department of Bacteriology, Mycology & Parasitology, Statens Serum Institute and the candidate will carry out experimental work in both departments. The work will include bacterial genetics as well as the use of cell culture and animal infection models in combination with flow cytometric cell sorting.

The scholarship is available to students with four years of academic studies within biochemistry and molecular biology. Documented experience with in vivo expression technology as well as the use of simple infection models is required. The applicant will be enrolled within the 4+4 PhD programme at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Southern Denmark.

The 4+4 PhD programme means that the enrolment is divided into a two year scholarship and two years of employment. Employment stops automatically at the end of the period. The holder of the Fellowship is not allowed to have other paid employment during the four-year period.

The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement of 1 October 2008 on salaried PhD fellows between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).

The successful candidate will be enrolled at this university in accordance with faculty regulations and the Danish Ministerial Order on the PhD Programme at the Universities (PhD order).
