To maximize your chance of receiving the most aid possible, we suggest applying first to the AFS Global Leaders Scholarship. YES Abroad Interest Form
Global Leaders is AFS’s main scholarship program, offering partial need and merit-based scholarships to qualified applicants who are open to considering a variety of AFS countries. Global Leaders scholarship applications are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis, and we encourage you to submit all need and/or merit-based scholarship application materials at once. Candidates are urged to apply as early in the school year as possible—the earlier your application is reviewed, the larger the pool of available aid. The appropriate time to apply for scholarships is between your preliminary application and full application.
If you qualify, here are the current award ranges for Global Leaders. Please note that the maximum awards are exclusively for students who simultaneously show the highest level of need and merit.
year 700-3800 $
Semester 600- 2700 $
Summer 500-1800 $
How to apply for an AFS Global Leaders Scholarship
1. Submit your preliminary application, including $75 application fee.
2. Submit your scholarship application cover sheet. This step takes about five minutes.
3. Submit the appropriate forms from the list below, based on what you’ve indicated on your cover sheet. Need-based aid application – Please note that there is a $34 processing fee payable directly to FAST; fee waivers available for qualified families. Merit-based scholarship application
4. Within one week of AFS receiving all of the materials you indicated you would submit on your cover sheet, your AFS Advisor will call to inform you what scholarship award you can expect to receive based on your application.
5. In order to receive the award, your full AFS application, including tuition deposit and interview, must be received by AFS-USA within one month. If your full application is accepted by AFS, the award will be credited to your account. Please note that programs fill on a first-come, first-served basis, and if the program of your choice has filled before your application is submitted, you can discuss alternatives with your advisor.
All candidates who receive financial assistance are expected to help further the mission of AFS—working toward a more just and peaceful world—upon their return by volunteering for AFS in their home or school community.
